Our Community Projects - in and around Mercedes, Texas.
2011 Food Pantry Walkathon

Colonia is a Spanish word for a neighborhood. In Mexico the suburbs are called Colonias. In South Texas the word takes on a slightly different meaning. Here colonias refers to the settlements that spring up along the border where there is no need to comply with local building codes.
The colonias are home to the poorest of the poor. Housing often falls far short of even the most minimal standards of health and safety.
The people in the colonias experience all of the difficulties and challenges associated with generational poverty...addiction, broken families, food insecurity, lack of appropriate health care, and above all else a lack of hope.
Several of our church members, as well as Winter Texans and other friends, work in the colonias of South Texas and Nuevo Progreso, serving various Colonia needs.
Church volunteers greet and assist approximately 35 mission teams a year, providing translation and prep work as needed. Mercedes is a mission center.
We have designed our education, kitchen and fellowship buildings to double as a staging area for visiting medical and construction teams serving in Mexico.
